Consciousness is something we experience each and every day.  In fact life and consciousness are intertwined so deeply one cannot be without the other.  From a metaphorical perspective consciousness is the spark that lights our eyes and lives.  Although science cannot pinpoint what consciousness is or where it begins or ends, it cannot be denied.  When all is said and done experience is all we take away with us.  Our material wealth is important to us while we are still on this planet but it does not define our essence. If we look at the natural world can we deny that animals feel, sense and experience? In the past science considered animals to be automata (robotic/machine like) and it’s only recently (2012) it was finally admitted, animals have thoughts and feelings. Humans have animal companions for various reasons, most commonly - they light up our lives!  The richness of experience and feelings of acceptance and delight reach deep within our hearts and fill us with a sense of well-being and belonging.  However, there is another story, it is not the one we are  weaving with our thoughts and actions every day, it’s the animal’s story from their perspective and the entangled one that we co-create together.  Taking the time to look at the story from the animals perspective means reaching deep within ourselves and losing the idea that we are superior in any shape, way or form.  It means seeing animals as equals and as such respecting them and honoring them for their uniqueness both as individuals and in their groups.  Part of my role is building the bridge between our internal and external selves, our doing and the being, the scientific endeavor and experience.

With this in mind I established The Society for Animal Consciousness.
